About the Uechi-Ryu Kenkyujo (上地流唐手研究所)

The Uechi-Ryu Kenkyujo (上地流唐手研究所) follows the traditional 10-kyū ranking system practiced in Okinawan dōjō and recognized by the International Uechi-Ryu Karate Federation (IUKF).
Through this program, students can learn all the katas, kyū-level kumite, and dan-level partner drills (also known as yakusoku kumite).

Founded by Lionel Reynaud (麗野莉雄念), the Kenkyujo is dedicated to the preservation and dissemination of authentic Uechi-Ryu Karate.

Structured Learning Levels

The Uechi-Ryu system is based on eight core kata, and while that number may seem smaller than in other styles (e.g., Shotokan has around 30), Uechi-Ryu emphasizes depth and layered practice.

Each kata is taught across three progression levels, allowing students to explore increasing technical depth and internalize key dynamics as they advance.

The “Old Way” of Uechi-Ryu

A special training cycle is dedicated to traditional Okinawan methods, often referred to in the U.S. as “The Old Way.”

This approach is based on teachings passed from Master Takamiyagi Toyama (a direct student of Kanei Uechi) to Master George Mattson, and it integrates older training concepts, kata variations, and principles rarely taught in modern dōjō.

Kumite: The Partner Training System

Kumite (yakusoku kumite) helps develop timing, distance, and application through structured partner drills.

Uechi-Ryu features two main kumite systems:

Dan Kumite – required for black belt and advanced ranks
Kyū Kumite – practiced up to brown belt

Understanding “Yin and Yang” in Technique

The Yin-Yang (陰陽) principle is not just philosophical—it has practical application in Uechi-Ryu.
Understanding balance, force dynamics, and the flow of technique through this lens allows students to grasp deeper layers of combat efficiency and body mechanics.

Exploring Ancient Kata

For students curious about Uechi-Ryu’s historical development, we offer access to rare kata such as:

  • Furui Seisan (Old Seisan – 2 versions)
  • Daini Seisan (Second Seisan)

These forms provide insight into the evolution of the system and its Chinese roots.

The “Suparenpei Swinimer” Kata

Though not part of traditional Uechi-Ryu, the Swinimer version of Sparringpei has gained interest among practitioners—particularly outside mainland France.
While this kata is considered non-canonical by some purists, it is included in the IUKF U.S. curriculum, and is available as an optional study module for those interested in broader applications and styles.
